Keep Looking Up!
We had an exciting day on Friday, February 11th when Dean Regas, an outreach astronomer from the Cincinnati Observatory came to present to our second graders. Thanks to Mr. Banks for assisting us to pay for this assembly with some schoolwide funds. We cannot afford field trips at this time, but appreciate having Mr. Regas come to Trenton. Everyone learned something new about the earth, moon, stars and space from his presentation. Mr. Regas' stardom is just beginning to shine, as he has been recording five minute astronomy clips for PBS recently. You can see him on YouTube by typing in "Stargazer". The students are in the middle of a month-long activity of observing the moon nightly and recording the changes they see. Moon calendars are to be brought to school each of the next few Fridays. There will be a full moon on February 17th.
We are busy practicing our math facts. One of the most helpful things to know is the complements of ten such as 9+1, 8+2, 7+3, etc. There is a fun game that we play to practice these at... www.coolmath-games.com/0-math-lines Give it a try!
Congratulations to the Babeck second graders who participated in this year's Math-a-thon to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. $2606.55 was raised for critically ill children at St. Jude. Mrs. Gorman's class had the most participants of the five classes with 13 students bringing in donations. Our class also raised the most with a total of $800. I am very proud of the efforts of all of our Math-a-thoners this year! Jazmyne Harris raised to most for St. Jude in our class. Great job Jazmyne!
Second graders did a marvelous job donating to our grade level auction basket. Our basket was an ice cream basket containing a gift card to THE CONE in West Chester and a Cone t-shirt and stuffed cow toy. In addition, there is a UDF gift card included. The estimated value of our basket is $60. Please come to the carnival at EMS on May 7th to bid on baskets, play games and have some family fun. The times are 11AM-7PM .
Just a reminder... flip flops are not to be worn to school. They aren't sturdy enough for playing on the playground especially with the new layer of wood mulch that is now down.
Looking Ahead...
In May we will be doing a lot of end of the year testing. The first week of May will be our Terra Nova tests in Reading, Math, Science and Social Studies. Please have a good night's rest and eat breakfast, so you can do your best. Also, try to avoid being tardy or leaving early for appointments this week. Thank-you!
